Thesis =)

Helping others, making them feel better or happy, and wanting to make even the smallest difference in someone’s day has always come naturally; it is ingrained into me. Despite the difficulties that may arise, becoming a nurse will allow me to fulfill my passion for others.

Nursing is one of the many ways I will be able to fulfill my vocation to help others. "In over 100 years of nursing, there is one aspect that has not changed. That is caring. Caring is the core of nursing." (Godshall). Nurses take care of people, they make them feel better, and they demonstrate caring in a way that most professions can not. Nursing provides a variety of ways to help others. In this path, there will always be opportunities to express my desire to care for others.

TEDMED TALK

Jarvis, Debra. "Beyond surviving." Online video clip. TedMed, Oct. 2014. 5 Nov. 2014.

Debra Jarvis begins her talk by asking: "If I were to meet you and we only had a limited time to get to know each other, what would be the three things you would tell me about yourself?" She goes on to list things such as Holocaust or cancer survivor. She then wonders out loud why we are all so fast to say things like this.
Later in the talk Jarvis reveals that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she got the news people were clearly upset, but began to kind of label her as "having cancer". People asked how she would raise awareness of the disease, and eventually she began to feel like this diagnosis was taking over her life.
She concludes the talk by stating that it is not the disease or the survival that you should be carrying around with you, but rather the experience. What have you learned? What will you now do with your life, other than being, just a survivor?
She says that by letting the title of survivor claim you, you become trapped. You can not let this be your title forever.
What will you do with your experience?

My Thoughts: Jarvis brought up some really interesting points that I would not have really thought of before. Although she was mostly talking about cancer survivors, the idea can be applied to all aspects of life. Jarvis is encouraging people to move beyond their unfortunate experiences and to move on with life, become something else, do not hold this occurrence in your pocket all the time. How can this apply to my paper? Obviously I can agree with Jarvis because I want to be a nurse and will definitely encounter people who have lived (or are living) through difficult situations. I could be their TEDMED personal speaker and use the ideas of Jarvis to help patients move on with their lives; to move on from their troubles and focus on the future. What will they do now? Jarvis' ideas are positive and uplifting; the exact type of attitude a nurse needs to have when dealing with patients, and the exact kind of attitude I strive to have for myself every day. This video not only relates to my paper or my vocation, but also with my life and the type of person I want to be.
Go Debra!

Summary of my Source:

Godshall, Maryann.  “One hundred years of nursing: Helping each other heal.” Pediatric Nursing 25.3 (1999) : 287-305. Web. 28 Oct.  2014.

My source is about helping and healing. The nurse who wrote this article was trying to save an eight month old child who was already dying. The baby girl, ended up dying in front of her eyes. It didn't help either that she had a daughter at home who was the exact same age.
The nurse felt terrible and guilty that her daughter was okay, but this little girl had died.
She reached out to the mother of the girl, and they shared exchanges over the course of the next year. Together they healed. Obviously the nurse was in a different position than the mother, but she still felt horrible that she could not save the girl.
In the end she talks about nursing as not only a skill set, but an emotional roller coaster. It takes strength to overcome some of the tragedies you witness as a nurse, but it is quite encouraging to know that there are other people who can understand your pain and help you get through it.

My thoughts...
Nursing is a difficult profession, once again, not only skill-wise, but emotionally. It takes a toll on all involved. Am I prepared to witness and be a part of these realities? Of course not, but I think that the good will outweigh the bad, and that eventually I will get used to the pain, learn to deal with it, and move on. Focusing on the good things in life are the most important.
I want to be the best nurse I can be, so I too can say that I did everything possible to save someone's life, and hopefully I will save many.

AHMAZING QUOTE

From my source...
Godshall, Maryann.  “One hundred years of nursing: Helping each other heal.” Pediatric Nursing 25.3 (1999) : 287-305. Web. 28 Oct.  2014.

"In over 100 years of nursing, there is one aspect that has not changed. That is caring. Caring is the core of nursing. In no other specialty of nursing is caring more important than in caring for infants and children. Parents place their trust in pediatric nurses' hands to care for the most cherished thing in their lives their children.
What follows is the story of an experience that has forever changed my life. It has made me look at nursing differently. It has made me not only a better nurse, but a better person.
When I entered nursing, I was excited and energized to "change the world." What I didn't realize was how nursing was going to change me. Nursing has taught me valuable lessons in my life and when I reflect on these experiences I realize that this is my chosen path."
Love love love it, this is exactly how I want to feel and what I want to do with my life.
